One day recently, a student came to take class and he was having a rough day. To top it off, right before class he had an accident that messed up his uniform. There was no time to change into something else. His choices were to either take class in his uniform or miss class entirely. While his grandmother was helping him clean it the best they could, the student was very upset and did not want to take class and be embarrassed by his uniform. His grandmother did a fantastic job cleaning it up so we instructors didn’t even notice. With a little cajoling from her, he did take class. Then, he did a fantastic job all class. I had no idea that he was upset and thinking of going home just before.
At the end of class, he earned our attitude of the day stripe on his belt for his focus and intensity all class. After classes, grandmother talked with us about what had happened. Despite his trying day, he persevered through class and got rewarded for it. It was a great reminder of when things aren’t going your way it’s not time to quit; it’s time to push so you can get to the finish line and get to that reward. We were so happy that he got to experience that!
I love adding new students to classes. To see them not only enjoy the class, but receive the benefits, leadership and respect that we instill is wonderful. Every student has their own path in life and most people don’t find it until they start to explore. I feel like martial arts allows them to ask questions they never would have though of asking. So in turn it helps them to find some sort of path, maybe here or elsewhere.
I’ve come to understand the importance of exercising and working out outside of work. I’ve seen results from even doing just a few months of working out. What’s great about being in better shape is that I can set a better example to students of how intensity and hard work should be. Endurance and strength training have really helped me out. I’m looking forward to the continued health benefits and improvement in my own martial arts abilities and sharing that with my students!
