This week, our leadership life skill is on goal setting. We teach our students that a goal is something you want and you’re willing to work very hard for, “This is what I want. This is what I plan to do to make it happen,” and then you absolutely make it happen.
It’s October. I just want to remind our students and remind anyone who’s watching that you have three months left to finish out your goals for 2017. Are there any goals you’ve set for this year that you just haven’t gotten around to? Me personally, I’ve already started thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2018 and I had to remind myself a couple of days ago, “Hey, wait a second, there are still three months left in 2017.” You have three months to push and accomplish your goals.
I want to share a thought with you, that it is never okay to not hit your goals. I know that sometimes you don’t hit your goals and it is what it is, but just to have the internal drive that you think, “Okay, I set a goal. This is what I wanted. Let me at least go after it. Let me at least achieve it. Let me at least make it happen. Do everything that I possibly can to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish, what I set out to accomplish…”
If you haven’t achieved what you want — 5 things that I’d like to encourage you to do.
1- Go back and review your goals for 2017.
2- Make a list of everything that you accomplished and celebrate. Take the time to feel the accomplishment.
3- Make a list of the things yet that you haven’t done, that you plan on doing, that you said you want to make it happen.
4- Make a plan and figure out what it’s going to take to accomplish those things.
5- You got to work your face off! You got to push! You got to hustle!
At the beginning of the year, you said, “Okay, 2017. I’m going to accomplish this, this, and this.” Well, if you haven’t done them just yet, figure out what it’s going to take and go after it and make it happen so that at the end of the year, you can look back and go, “Man, I did it! I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish,” and then you push for 2018.
I’ve heard it said, often times, “We overestimate what we can accomplish in one year, and often, we underestimate what we can accomplish in five years.” Even if you overestimated what you thought you’d be able to do, at least go after it, make it happen-PUSH. Some of you may be watching the video thinking, “I never set any goals at the beginning of this year.” You still have three months left! Start thinking about what 2018 going to look like. “What am I going to do next year that’s going to be great?” A year from now, what will you have wished that you started doing today? Think about that, make it happen, plan for 2018, plan for the next couple years and look into the future, decide what you want and go after it!
This is what we do as martial artists, right? We start as a white belt, we look into the future. This idea of goal setting, of planning, of working really hard to accomplish what you want is also a super life skill that will help us accomplish anything else that we want in the future.
